How to Start a Career in Construction Safety
Starting a new career in construction safety always starts with construction first. Getting experience in construction, the methods and techniques, and tools involved is the first thing a person interested in construction safety should start. The field of construction safety is a quickly rising field and many are moving from the actual construction to safety.
List Your Experience
Before you apply anywhere, sit down and make a list of your experience at each different construction job, and list any special training you've had. Things like handling hazardous waste, heating and plumbing, planning projects, and dealing with contractors, and sub-contractors. This special training is a big help in securing better paying jobs with more responsibility.
Apply For Jobs
After you've listed your experience, and drafted a resume, begin searching for jobs in the construction safety field. You can begin your search with the company you are already working for. In fact, you could even work part time for your current company to gain experience and work with someone who is already in construction safety.
The next thing you could do it look at an employment agency to help you find a construction safety job in your local area. If you are willing to move to a different area, then you can also broaden your search area. Work with a job counselor to evaluate your current training, and get recommendations on your resume, and any thing else you might need to help you start your new career. You could also look online at the various job boards for openings and submit your resume electronically.
Go on Your Own
There is also the option of starting your own construction safety company. It would be best if you had some training, and experience in construction and safety. You can then contract your services out to construction companies that do not have their own safety officer. You could then work with them to make sure all the safety regulations are being followed. If you are working for yourself, it is important to keep these beginning relationships very strong. They are your future references, and being able to keep them happy will help you secure future contracts with other construction companies.
Finding new contracts is the toughest part of your own business, but it can be done through local flyers, classified ads, and online advertising with your own website. Network with local construction companies and get to know the people who own them and work there. You will then be known by them and when they are looking for someone you will be who they call.
Starting a career in construction safety is a great opportunity for someone who already has experience in the construction industry and can work well with others.

A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing.
