Responsibilities of a Construction Manager
In order to understand what a construction manager does, you are first going to have to understand what a construction project and these construction jobs entail. There are the regular construction jobs that are usually commissioned by a city and most of the time involves funds that are provided by that city. Then there are other jobs that are commissioned by individuals.
These types of construction jobs might not seem incredibly fair, but when it is commissioned by the individual, a bank is usually involved. This can be good or bad for both the client as well as the construction workers themselves. It can be good because it means that the entire lump sum is not needed at once. It can be bad because the project needs to be at a certain rate of completion each week or no pay will be issued by the bank. This seems very unfair, but the bank needs to protect their investment as well, and they don't want to be investing in a project that will never be completed, or issue all of the funds before the project is completed. This is to protect both the bank and the client.
That being said, there are a number of things that a construction manager needs to do. He or she needs to supervise every single phase of the project so that they can be sure it reaches its required completion level at the end of the week. They also need to make sure that everyone is doing their job and doing it right. As harsh as it sounds, if someone just isn't cutting it they will need to terminate their employment. This is the ugly truth about construction jobs, not everyone can do them!
Other responsibilities might include taking care of the blueprints. You have to remember that the blueprints can be expensive to print up, and in many cases, it might be very hard or even impossible to get a replacement. Anyone who has managed to leave the prints on the floor at the end of a day's work in the shadow of a rainstorm knows that this can be a pain.
The requirements for a job of this nature are fairly steep. First of all, you will need to look for a college that offers a degree in construction management. Other courses that you might want to take can include chemistry, accounting, and even physics. The best part is that if you have a degree in an unrelated field, you can go ahead and get a master's degree in construction management. This means that you won't have to feel like you're wasting your time while you get your degree in accounting or business administration. As a matter of fact, these fields will help you greatly when looking for your construction employment. Construction jobs can be easy to get, but when you do enter the field you want to make sure that you are at the top, and that is where the money is in construction careers.
You will need to be able to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines. These construction careers aren't going to be easy, but at least they will be profitable. On top of that, so long as you are able to adapt and do your job properly you may very well end up loving your job!
