How to Mold Concrete Cylinder

There are many vocations of yesteryear whose relevance has diminished with the passage of time. Yet there are others that are just as important today as they were thousands of years ago. Construction jobs fall in this latter category. Since time immemorial, man has always had a need to build. It started with the basic construction of a home to live in and moved on to the construction of market places, kings' palaces, places of worship and entertainment venues such as the coliseum. Today, construction projects involve all the aforementioned but also include the construction of bridges as well as multi-story office and apartment blocks that are a common feature of city skylines all over the world.
That there is a demand for construction work and construction jobs is not in doubt. However, if you are to lock in that construction job position you had applied for, there are certain things you need to do to make sure you stand head and shoulders above your competition. One of the skills that you must have is the ability to mold a concrete cylinder. Now, whereas there are concrete cylinders constructed as an end in their self, when it comes to construction jobs, molding concrete cylinders is a process used to test the quality and overall strength of the concrete to be used in a particular project.
The importance of knowing how to mold concrete cylinders cannot be overemphasized; any other checks would be futile if the quality of concrete used is below the required standard. The repercussions on safety are often too grave to contemplate. Once the cylinder is prepared, it is then crushed in an effort to determine the amount of pressure it can withstand prior to its collapse. When preparing the concrete cylinder, you will need a hand trowel, a 15cm wide by 30 cm high cylinder mold and its lid, a rubber mallet and a tamping rod.
The first thing you need to do when molding a concrete cylinder is to collect a sample of the concrete from the source. Scoop the concrete as it is being poured out from the mixer. Mix the concrete sample again using a hand trowel before using this concrete to fill up the cylinder mold. Three almost-equal scoops using the hand trowel should suffice. After each scoop, use a tamping rod to push it into position so that there are as few air pockets as possible trapped in the concrete. You can also use a rubber mallet in addition to the tramping rod so that the concrete in the cylinder mold is kept as compact as is practically possible. Repeat this process after each scoop. The third scoop will have concrete overflowing from the top of the mold which you will need to wipe off so that the lid can fit into position. After this, all you need to do is allow it to dry and you have you concrete ready for testing.
Once you understand this, all you need to do is to maintain interview etiquette and you will win over the interviewers in the construction jobs you apply for. Be respectable and pleasant with everyone including the receptionist and guard. Do not be afraid to ask questions as it is a sign of confidence and interest. Ensure your answers to interviewer questions are unambiguous and truthful. Finally, remember to switch off your cell phone and any other gadgets that may disrupt the interview: you would not want to lose a construction job because of a cell phone and especially after you have already fulfilled all the technical requirements.

A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing. He was paid very well and was more or less forgotten—doing very little of anything. He would show up at the office at 9:00 a.m. each day, try to look busy—do a task now and then—and then get in his car at 5:30 p.m. each evening and dr... |
