Finding Promising Construction Careers

Finding a job requires a lot of creativity and patience, but this does not mean there is a lack of opportunities for the kind of job some people would like to get into. While there are industries and sectors that show consistent high demand for their kind of skilled workers, many others are following suit. Jobs will always be available for those who know where to look. Making a career out of these jobs is also possible.

Construction careers, for instance, are one of these possibilities. Construction positions and related jobs include construction managers, construction and building inspectors, construction equipment operators, electricians, superintendents, field engineers, architects, laborers, and more. Hundreds of private companies and government agencies are always on the lookout for good candidates who have the skills, training, experience, and earned degrees to fill up various construction work positions across different states.

The larger the construction project, like an industrial complex or building, the more people are needed in a construction work as the project are often divided into segments where more technical and labor-intensive positions are opened to qualified candidates. These segments are site preparation, building construction, and building systems where more specific kinds of work need to be done based on a given timeline. Every segment's specific timeline is integrated into the overall project duration and hiring people who have the better experience and skills to meet the demand, including quality output, is important in every project. Construction employment should not be difficult for those who can meet this need, whether in technical positions, skilled, or administrative.

Prospects for construction careers are high as construction or repair of projects such as roads, bridges, office buildings, dam and water supply sites, tunnels, recreational and sports centers continue. According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, construction and building inspectors for example, have faster than average employment growth. The position requires one to have a significant amount of experience and background in engineering, construction technology, architecture, and similar experiences. The more experience and skills gained, the better prospects a candidate has at making a good career of it. Most states require an inspector to have training and a license or certification to get the job. The same BLS survey study reveals 44 percent of project work for construction occupation was found in local governments while majority of the people who held this inspector qualification were self-employed.

Construction managers can also have promising careers in construction with their experience and skills. In more complex and long-term projects, this position is highly in demand. Construction managers have the overall responsibility of making sure that a project is completed within the pre-set requirements such as timeline, budget and materials allocation, design and technical applications. He also can make decisions on the hiring and dismissal of subordinates, and coordinates closely with the people involved in the various aspects of the work. The larger the project, the more assistants and technical people a construction manager has, to help him supervise laborers and the smaller details of the project. Construction work at this level for the manager means bigger responsibilities and requires more experience, substantial technical and engineering background, license or certification, and the best training.

Construction employment is also available for other positions such as surveyor, maintenance, planning, safety, quality assurance, administration, landscape, purchase, specialist, laborer, estimator, and more. Most of these positions require the necessary college degrees, training, and experience. For the technical positions to be applied for, a license and certification are still required, while the laborers may only be asked to be high school graduates but experience and good skills are often expected by employers.

Every construction occupation is valued as construction projects always have specific and detailed plans in each segment and perfect coordination among all workers and employees is the usual practice. Getting the best people who are good at their particular job is very important as the success of each construction project relies heavily on the availability of people who can fill the needed positions. People who are able to fulfill the demands of this job can easily build careers in construction.

Building those construction careers should be the aim of many people when the basic requirements are already there. Why You Should Never Miss a Company Holiday Party or Invitation to Your Boss’s Home
A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing. He was paid very well and was more or less forgotten—doing very little of anything. He would show up at the office at 9:00 a.m. each day, try to look busy—do a task now and then—and then get in his car at 5:30 p.m. each evening and dr...
