Suiting Up for a Construction Career
A construction career remains one good prospect for anyone looking at making long-term goals in the construction sector. Projects for full construction or repairs of infrastructures like roads, bridges, dam and water systems, tunnels, office or commercial buildings, and others need properly trained people who have the desire, the clear goals, the training, experience, and academic background geared toward a successful career in construction.
Construction jobs such as laborers, construction and building inspectors, engineers, construction managers, electricians, quality and assurance, administration, planners, specialists, maintenance, and assistant managers are only some of the positions people can find in construction projects in most states around the country. Construction managers, for example, were found highly in demand in Texas last year with 28,010 employed, according to a survey research conducted by the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics. National employment for the same position was at 204,760. Construction and building inspectors also have "faster than average" employment prospects; 44 percent last year were found to have worked in local government projects. Skilled workers like construction equipment operators also have good construction employment prospects, according to BLS.
It is interesting to note that most higher-ranked positions in the construction sector were filled by people who started out in the various lower-ranked positions such as laborers, painters, or plumbers. The years, work experiences, earned degrees became very useful stepping stones by these people who much later on decided on a construction career by working their way up to become construction managers or assistant managers, or construction and building inspectors. Construction and repair jobs are available everywhere around the country and construction employment will never fall off job listings based on the trending.
In a 2008 BLS data, construction jobs were found in 884,300 construction establishments in the US. Building construction contractors were at 269,700 and specialty trade contractors at 557,000. Small construction establishments employ around 12 percent of most skilled workers. Jobs in construction also offer better options compared to other industries for people who prefer to run their own businesses like a construction company. Around 68 percent of employers in this sector employed lesser than five workers, which is the average for most small construction businesses. A good number of people in the construction sector are self-employed.
A construction career can be built by anyone who wishes to get his dream on the go. While many have made it to the higher positions with their experience, it is recommended that for a certain position, one must have the necessary training, a bachelor's degree in a technical course like civil engineering or construction science for the higher positions such as construction engineer, assistant construction manager, or construction manager. Most construction managers also earned master's degrees in construction science while very few have doctorate degrees. Construction managers with master's degrees commonly are employed by large companies or corporations.
Jobs in construction are varied and many skilled workers or laborers are also in demand. While some only finished high school, trainings programs are available for them. Construction equipment operators, for instance, undergo formal apprenticeship, on-the-job trainings, or a paid training program. These trainings should only be the start, everyone has the opportunity to work their way up to better and higher-paying construction jobs so long as the proper trainings, experience, and degrees are also earned.
Jobs in construction are scattered across the country with thousands working on residential or commercial buildings, road or bridge construction or repair, or sports complex or office buildings being built. Getting through to these jobs can either be done by going to the local government and asking around for construction projects on the blueprint or are already being started, or repairs they need to do on some bridges or water systems or a school building. Small construction owners can also be approached in your locality for private contracted projects. These small construction employers always have projects up their sleeves because of their contacts with both government agencies and private offices or commercial building owners.
Another more convenient way to get the best options for constructions jobs are the hundreds of online jobsites or adboards, classifieds, or company websites who are calling for people looking to build a career in construction.

A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing. He was paid very well and was more or less forgotten—doing very little of anything. He would show up at the office at 9:00 a.m. each day, try to look busy—do a task now and then—and then get in his car at 5:30 p.m. each evening and dr... |
