To get a civil engineering job, you must have, at least, a diploma in civil engineering. B.E., M.E., B.Arch, B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD are the graduate degrees which are required to get a higher position in a civil construction job. To become a trainee, a diploma in civil engineering is sufficient along with 0-2 years of experience.
A graduate degree is required to become a construction site supervisor or to be in the administrative department or in the planning section. These positions usually require two to four years of sound experience. Some construction firms even require five to ten years experience.
A civil construction job demands lots of profound skills. You must have in depth knowledge of surveying, foundation, irrigation systems, building drawing, structural drawing, estimation and costing, hydraulics, works management etc. according to the type of job profile. Updated and thorough knowledge about construction materials is a must.
In addition, especially in higher-level jobs, you must be familiar with computer programs such as AutoCAD, Excel, Word, Access, 3D-MAX along with the computer language C++. Above all, you must have good communication skills, which is required in presentation of projects and giving proper instructions to other workers. You must possess problem solving ability, have excellent management skills, and be able to deliver a project within the given deadline. You must also have the foresight required for planning a project layout in drawing.
