There are some people who might wonder what exactly is involved in Construction Management. The question that one should ask is what is NOT involved in construction management. This position essentially entails being in charge of any construction project that you're involved in. Chances are you'll be in charge of several other people regardless of what the project is. You'll find that in Construction Management you're in charge of the following things:

  • Efficient use of Funding: It's important that the funding in a construction project be used as effectively as possible. This doesn't mean getting the cheapest materials because you can have problems with the building later on. But it does mean that you want to work out a budget and make sure that you can get all the equipment and materials that you require for a given job. This usually entails a lot of shopping around to make sure that you get the best deal without sacrificing quality.

  • Staying within the scope of the Job: The actual details of a construction job need to be established early on, and these usually include what you will and won't do. The scope can be changed later on but if that happens then the actual pricing will need to be discussed. In that case, someone may have to speak to the bank because a lot of the time it's the bank that is funding the project.

  • Schedule: Most jobs need to be completed within a certain period of time. This is especially true if a bank is funding the project. If there is a bank loan involved then a certain percentage of the project needs to be completed before the bank will issue a check. If the project is not completed at the right time then the construction crew might not get paid for that week.

  • Work Distribution: You'll have to assign the right jobs to the right people, this is very important, especially in construction. You'll need to make sure that the guy who is good with cutting is on the saw, and the one who is good with roofing is on the roof. The roofing should probably be a group effort anyway.
In order to get a position like this you will likely need to go through some courses. The best thing that you can do is get a degree in civil engineering. You will also need some experience, and to get that you will more than likely need to start out at the bottom as a laborer and work your way up. Over time as you gain experience you'll have a lot more options available to you, and as you learn more, you'll become worth more to the company that you work for. If you are worth more, then you will find that you will be paid more as you can perform more tasks and contribute to the project.

It may take a bit of time to climb to the top, but it'll be worth it when you finally make it, because you'll have a great salary, and a job that is in demand every day of the year.
