For those considering construction careers, it may be worth considering a degree in construction management technology. This will take your place in construction employment from someone with construction jobs at the bottom of the ladder to someone with a construction career who is much higher up the ladder.

Unsurprisingly this will also add to the earning potential, as someone with this degree is looking at earning anything from $50000 a year to a massive $90000 a year - certainly worth considering.

Construction employment is big business, and places on this course are always highly in demand. However, you will need to meet the minimum entrance standards before you can even be considered. You will need to have qualifications to show in the following four areas, and be able to demonstrate your skills accordingly: Physics, Physiology, Construction Drawing and Surveying, all of which are the basic skills for any construction careers so should be subjects you have chosen naturally when setting out on a construction job path.

The course itself is a mixture of theoretical work and practical work. Just because you are aiming to enter your construction career at a higher level does not mean you shouldn't be able to demonstrate all the skills from all the levels yourself. In fact it is paramount that you can proficiently demonstrate all of them, so you will be expected to learn something like laying concrete properly, which is practical, hands on and none too clean!

You will also spend time learning about people management, as this is a very important skill. Good people management can make or break a project, as it is important to keep your staff happy, no matter what level of construction jobs they are doing for you. You also need to have a good knowledge of products used in the construction industry, what they are used for and why, when it is appropriate to use a substitute product, and when only the real thing will do. Surveying is also an important part of the course and you will need to understand the importance of a site survey, how to record the findings and what decisions need to be made once you have the site report in front of you. Finally a key component of the course focuses on the equipment used in the construction industry, how to use it, site safety and issues like that which obviously are all very important.

This course will give you the skills and the qualifications needed to become a construction manager, and this in itself will open lots of doors for you, whether you choose to work for a firm or whether you choose to work on a freelance self employed basis which is an increasingly popular choice as you can choose the hours you work to suit yourself. Many operate on a consultancy basis and the money as discussed can be excellent, especially if you build up a good reputation for yourself. You may actually find you have more work that you can cope with!
